Inspiration rut, over! Thanks to these two Parisian beauties as captured by iksus. I finally have my ticket for Paris and the French Riviera in order, and so the upcoming trip seems real. Finally. So I figure it's time to start the heavy surfing again for pre-travel dreaming. These to fairytale-like images are as dreamy-delicious a place to start as any, right? They're like windows looking out on an ever so slowly fading memory, softening into a fuzzy-fabulous dream.

I hella heart Flickr.

In helping me prep for an upcoming trip to the Big Apple, a good friend made the following photo request - "There's this neon sign somewhere in Hell's Kitchen on a cross that says 'sin will find you out' - I just can't remember where!" It only took two baby seconds on Flickr to find it out. Photos, address and cross streets, everything!

I am now ready to venture to New York in search of sin and a sign, in Hell's Kitchen, no less.

Gorgeous! I've always wondered what other stunning structures Monsieur Eiffel designed. I love the striking similarities in steel that this bridge shares with its grand Parisian cousin, La Tour Eiffel.

One of the places in Paris that I'm looking forward to exploring for the first time is La Défense. On each of my prior Parisian adventures I've stuck close to the center of town and Paris proper, leaving the outer limits for a later date. I think the time has finally arrived!

The weather in San Francisco has been sort of strange today. Overcast and bright, but dark. If you can picture that. No rain, and not cold, but not an ideal day to be outside. My idea of museum weather. Thus my selection of this moody and moving photo in the Musée d'Orsay. Wish I were there.

I wonder when I'll finally get around to scaling the tower. It would be nice to see it from a different, off-the-ground angle, like this one. Pretty. But pretty high, I assume. And open-air. Which I'm not sure will help or heighten my fear of heights! Guess there's only one way to find out.

I'm inspired to take a break today from the scenic Seine shots and views to La Tour Eiffel in favor of a little flavor, or six. As prettily pictured above. If you're not familiar with French macarons, you really need to get with the program. They're little bites of crackly, chewy heaven and the best are from the house of Ladurée, founded in 1862 in Paris, which created this part cookie, part cake, ganache-filled all-crack treat at the turn of the 20th century. If you've had one or when you finally do, you'll understand the reference to hardcore street drugs. And while there are other reputable dealers in French macarons, both inside the confines of Paris and around the world, I've never had anything nearly so delicious or addictive as at the source of genius, Ladurée. No trip to Paris should be without a hit, I mean a handful, of macarons from this historic Parisian pâtisserie.

Like the Eiffel Tower as pictured in this wonderful photograph, my trip to Paris is just coming into view. Planning is half the fun of travel, and I enjoy it nearly as much as the actual trips themselves. Is that strange? My god. Where has the time gone? I have really been neglecting this blog. As well as my workouts. But the latter is none of your concern. Lucky you! Here's to getting back on track. The focus for now being Paris, as that will be the site of my next international escapade. And nothing is more inspiring when planning a trip of one's own than thumbing through the memories of fellow travelers. Take this dreamy interpretation of the Parisian cityscape. Old and new at the same time. I love it!

This was my answer to a question on luck and photography for another photog's blog. Thought I'd share it here, too. Seemed an appropriate post for St. Patrick's Day.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are many moments and places that I feel fortunate to have captured with my camera, but one that stands out in particular is a delicious door I encountered on a tiny island in the Bay of Kotor. Having come to Croatia for two weeks before going back to Budapest for one more, I was looking forward to doing a number of day trips from my home base in Dubrovnik. I am obsessed with Venice, one might say, and had my heart set on visiting the tiny town of Kotor, an UNESCO World Heritage site and former outpost of La Serenissima. The weather wasn't what I'd hoped for on the designated day, overcast and drizzling a fine mist, but it was my one opportunity to see this special place and so I set off for Kotor anyway on a chartered bus tour. Alone with my camera and strangers from all over Europe, I broke away from the pack of friendly Brits I'd attached myself to as everyone clamored into the pint-sized Church of Our Lady of the Rock. It was so beautiful outside and as the doors to the church closed, I found myself enveloped by a stony and almost palpable peace. While I was anxious to head inside and learn the story of this artificial island and its charming little church, I couldn't help but linger a few moments more outside to study the mystic - no, more like magical - sea green door before me. None of my fellow tourists had given it any notice, let alone the long second look it so dramatically deserved. Surrounded by weathered white to gray blocks of stone, it was mesmerizingly beautiful. Although I could have stood there studying the door indefinitely, I ultimately broke the spell by snapping two quick pics before passing inside. The church and its door remained in my mind's eye but melted or morphed into something of a surreal dream. Back in Budapest, I returned excitedly to the Castle District, where but two weeks before I'd seen some of the most stunning wooden doors anywhere. I had in mind a particular door in dark green that I couldn't wait to see again, and re-shoot. With their intricate design, larger than life size, and patina of peeling paint, the Castle District's old doors were an architectural travel photographer's dream. I'd been quite ill that first week in Budapest and had only had the energy to take a few test shots. But I wasn't to finish the job. In the city's haste to renovate and restore, I was horrified to find that all of the doors I'd fallen in love with only two weeks earlier were now freshly painted. No peeling. Still beautiful, but lacking the unique character that came with their aging and cracking coats. In frustration, I photographed my green door and its neighbors, and went home disappointed. Until, in reviewing all of my images from four weeks abroad, I rediscovered the green door from Montenegro. If I'd taken no other pictures in that entire month, the lucky find of this special door would have been more than memory and reward enough for the trip. I thank my lucky stars that I had my camera, batteries charged, to preserve that place and that moment - and above all that door - for myself, for my friends, for my family, and for you. It's a pretty wonderful door, isn't it? It looks like luck itself, perhaps.

Hope you enjoyed this peek behind The Green Door.

What an awesome shot! This really gives the feel for being in the middle of one of Venice's smaller and more claustrophobic streets. The "light at the end of the tunnel" - so to speak - is wonderful. Love this picture.

And incidentally, the narrowest streets in Venice are the Calesela de L'Ochio Grosso (at 53 cm wide, in Castello) and the Calle Varisco (at 58 cm wide, in Cannaregio). Both streets are on the big water- and tear-proof Rough Guide map of Venice I take with me on trips. Hard to find, but they're there!

My trip this spring can't come soon enough. I can't wait to return to this old and familiar city, and discover something new. This corner, for example. I know exactly where it is and I know it well, but I've never noticed or photographed it from this particular angle. One of the reasons why I love surfing through other people's pictures; no matter how well you know a place, there's always another angle that you'd never considered to make you see a city anew!

Sounds like the culture of Campo de' Fiori and other hot spots of Roman nightlife is about to undergo a major party-pooping change. I was just reading in this morning's paper about how Rome's new right-wing mayor has put into law stricter rules around alcohol after certain hours. Party all night long? No more. At least not out in public, drink in hand, on the streets of Roma. Oh, and nice picture by the way! The graffiti and stickered-up do-not-enter sign, and the light from the oncoming scooter; love it. Gives me a good feel for this bit of a city that I've not yet had the pleasure of seeing in person.

This photo may have been taken "with a poor Lumix Camera", but it's rich with artistic genius! Wonderful image. I love the reflection in the water. Both the black gondolas bobbing on a blue sky and the jumble of ochre and mustard buildings in the background. I know exactly where this is in Venice; it's a much snapped spot. And I think this is a unique image of the popular place. Very nice.

A friend of mine is reading a copy of City of Falling Angels that I gave to her to enjoy before our trip to Venice this spring. For some reason on my last trip there in 2005 I didn't visit the newly reopened Fenice theater. After the fact I read City of Falling Angels and now armed with some history of the theater and its place in Venetian history and society, I greatly anticipate a visit and tour. What a gorgeous theater!

Aside from the architecture and the history, the thing I love most about Venice is its cats. My friends there tell me there aren't as many as there used to be, but there are still little lions roaming in all corners of the city. This one here cracks me up. LOL cats. Love 'em.

I can't think of a better way to describe this photo than, "it's so Venice." A city with a million faces, facades, and moods to match, it can be hard to tell the difference between the real Venice and the museum or movie version of the city's - true? - self. Or is there a difference at all? I think that photos like this go a long way to answering that - unanswerable? - question. I know what my answer is. What's yours?

This is the most magical hour in Venice, in my personal opinion; the early morning hours when the city is yours. As everyone else sleeps. As to this particular picture - simply stunning. I've only ever seen Venice in the fog once, and it was fleeting. I hope to have similar mornings in Venice this spring. At least one!

New year, new post. Took me long enough, right? Happy (much belated) New Year! I look forward to traveling with you virtually through a flurry of inspirational photos in 2009. Starting with this here beauty by Hugo Martinez. I happened upon this photographer's work when searching for Lensbaby inspiration, as I am the proud new parent of a brand-spanking new Lensbaby Composer. Combined with my new Nikon D90, I hope to capture some spectacular shots in Venice, Italy this spring. Can't wait. In the meantime, I look to you all for inspiration. As per usual. I think Hugo Martinez' work with the Lensbaby is fantastic and I must say I'll be beyond pleased if any of my images are as delightful as his dreamy portraits of Paris. Kudos Hugo. You rock!

What a futuristic view, eh? Can you believe that this is Venice? A new Venice, of sorts. This is Calatrava's Ponte della Constituzione, the newest and only the fourth bridge to span the Grand Canal. I have been looking at many images of this new bridge on Flickr, and can't wait to see it for myself this spring. Over the next few days, I will post for you some of the most moving photos of this modern Venetian treasure. Complimenti to this photographer and all subsequent for being among the first to capture such a moving image of this awe-inspiring and futuristic bridge. Bravo!

Happy Holidays! It's been a blur, and as a consequence I've gotten dreadfully behind in my daily photo hunting and musing. I hope you can forgive me. Normally I would go back and select images for the days I've missed, but I'm still sapped for energy. So let's just see if I can't get back on track for today, and moving forward. In the meantime, cheers and best wishes for the close of 2008 and the start of 2009. Cheers and happy travels! Whether out there, or right here.

Most any city during the winter holidays seems like it'd be decked out gorgeous, but Paris seems that it would be especially so. I've never been in December, but it's definitely on my list of things to do. New Year's Eve sounds fun, too! And speaking of decked out gorgeous, how beautiful are these Holga shots? Incredible. Film is still unbeatable in many respects (particularly where mood is concerned), as these delicious images dreamily demonstrate.

I hope to get to Dubrovnik again, one of these years. It is so compact and intensely charming. I just loved it. And it's so close to other wonderful day-tripping sites like the island of Korcula, the seaside town of Cavtat, and the city and Bay of Kotor in neighboring Montenegro. I wasn't expecting to be as smitten with Croatia and the surrounding area as I was. It's a wonderful corner of the world with a rich and riveting history. Just delightful.

video

Today I'm pimping my own images, because I had too much fun making this little "video" - I use quotes here because really it's just a slideshow set to music - with Picasa 3. You gotta love The Google, and therefore, Picasa too. For a free image-editing program, Picasa pretty well rocks. In my book. Download it for yourself and have a little fun with your own photos. It's 100% gratis!

Your comments on this "video" are welcome, and encouraged! The photos you see here are mostly from my last trip to Venice in the fall of 2005. Seems like a million years ago now. Far too long. Can't wait to rectify that next year.

Back in August, a coworker - who also happens to be my friend and boss - and I did a little macaron taste-testing of our own. While the winner didn't out-taste our memories of Ladurée, it was pretty damn delicious nonetheless. So if you're ever in San Francisco, stop by La Boulange for some of the best macarons outside of Paris.

Being a travel photographer, I come home with oodles of images, but not many of myself. And not many of other people, either. I feel very uncomfortable photographing unsuspecting strangers. It feels invasive, disrespectful, and generally wrong. Though I know many wonderful photographs come about this way for other, gutsier photogs than me. But whether it's a secret snapshot of a local, or a posed composition of a willing model like the one above, I do enjoy looking at other people's portaits from abroad. And this one, in particular, I find fantastic. What a wonderful, many-layered memory. Simply magnificent.

First of all, if you love Paris and you've never been to Budapest, you really need to rectify that immediately. Budapest feels a lot like the City of Light in many ways, though is absolutely unique and different from Paris simultaneously. Constructed in white stone and perched on a hilltop overlooking the city, much like Sacre Coeur, the Fisherman's Bastion monument is delightful. But that should be apparent from these images.

There's nothing like a good gaggle of gondolas. Don't you think? Oh man. Counting down the days - well, the months still, really - until my spring fling in Venezia. A city so close to my heart, it just seems wrong that I haven't been now in three years. Where does the time go? My friends there have two kids now, whom I will meet for the first time. Big changes. But the city, the city will no doubt have remained much the same. Renovations here and there, but the same sparkling city as ever. There's a new bridge spanning the Grand Canal and the clock in Piazza San Marco is finally open to the public; it's been under renovation on each of my four prior trips. And I've still not yet been on a gondola ride. So much to look forward to. Your pictures help. I can't wait.

The full moon has made me kinda moody. These two Polaroids fit my lunar state of mind, perfectly. Sacre Coeur at night. An overcast Paris day. How delicious, right? No matter the (your) mood.

A delicious look at Paris through the eyes of Macla Calderon. What I wouldn't give to try one of those fabulous looking chocolate beers.

The Louvre has a lot of famous statues. The Winged Victory is my favorite. Can you see why?

When I visited Croatia for the first time in 2006 it truly took my breath away, in addition to stealing my heart. What a beautiful, warm country. The landscape and the architecture are amazing. It is Italy and Greece and something all its own. I can't wait to return and see more.

What a place! What light! To be there must be like dreaming on your feet. So surreal.
