Cat-loving Venophile (Venice! Not wine. But wine is fine, in its own right.) that I am, I can't wait to meet this majestic guy outside San Lorenzo church. Maybe I can cheer him up.

I like the framing on this photo. Every other picture of this lion features the church of San Lorenzo that he's guarding, in the background.

So, rather than make Camogli my home base on the Italian Riviera, I'm going with Genova. I was reading that it has the largest, most labyrinthine old town in Europe and I was instantly sold. After looking at a few inspiring pictures, like this one, I know I've picked the right city.

Though while wandering by day should be bliss, wandering the old town after dark is not advisable. The poorly lit, long and confusing old town streets are a good place not to get lost when the sun goes down. If you value your safety; same as in most major metropolitan areas anywhere, the world over.

Lately I've just been surfing Google's map of Liguria, floating down the coast and searching on one town after the next. Looking for *that one pretty picture* that will inspire me to make the day trip and see what there is to discover with my own camera. I went to the Post-Impressionist exhibit at the de Young Museum recently, and was not impressed. Then I happened upon The Art of the Steal on Netflix - streaming - and was blown away by the Post-Impressionist works in The Barnes Collection. Oh em gee. Now there's a bounty of beautiful works. And as fascinating as the collection is, the story behind it is even more riveting.

If you've not seen The Art of the Steal, please fix that. And pronto. Even if you're not an art-lover, it's a mind-boggling story about a man, his personal property, his wishes for that property after his death, and the way those with money and power - and non-profits, no less - have sought and succeeded in getting their mitts on what's not theirs.

And I always thought for-profit corporations were the shameless sharks in the water. Ha!

Oh, what I wouldn't give to be able to draw like this.

Taking trip pics is plenty fine and dandy, but what I really crave are personalized, hand illustrated impressions of the places I've been. And since I can't draw to save my life, I have to rely on the impressions of others over that of my own.

This is a typical scene in Venice.

Many visitors do not realize, but Venice's population has a faster rising average age than that of both the whole of Italy and the European Union. And while a lovely city to live in, Venice is a difficult city to call home. Particularly for the elderly.

To live comfortably in Venice, one must be comfortable with walking. A lot. Venice is a maze of stairs and bridges. Canals and boats too, yes. But many parts of the city are foot traffic only, and many old buildings do not have elevators.

Because we (or maybe it's just me) tend to only see slick pics of modern Cannes during its famous film festival, it's not apparent that it has a charming old quarter. I love this photo, Paul. The square format and silvery black-and-white tones lend perfectly to the timelessness of this scene. Even though I know that it is a modern image, I could easily believe that this is an old turn of the (20th) century gem. In a word, masterful.

In all my trips to Paris, I've still not been to La Defense. In my own defense, it always seems too far, and far too modern when I'm actually there and Paris proper is an option. So silly. Particularly when I stumble upon photographic bling like this image here. I love this photo. I enjoy taking architectural shots, with windows and what they reflect, in particular.

Therefore, I kick myself for not getting to La Defense to get a sweet shot like this one.

And that Bastille is stormed again, in protest. Eons after the original storming on July 14, 1789 - sure. But a pretty fitting place to stage a strike or protest then, nonetheless. Yes?

So, a little off the typical topic of travel today. But for good reason.

I went to one of the best weddings ever today, for my dear friends M & S and - brilliant fun folks that they are - they had a photo booth at their nuptials. A real, bonafide, old-fashioned photo booth. It was the life of the party, and came complete with props - bling, a viking hat, a top hat, and more. It was the definition of fabulousity in action. And they have the pics to prove it!

Therefore, it only follows that I'd want to pick an image today from someone else's wedding photo booth snaps. And this one, for one Golriz & Sam (congrats you two, whoever you are!!!), is golden. I encourage you to check out the entire stream of photo booth shots from their wedding. Because they rock. Each and every frame.

Is a photo booth at a wedding not the best idea, ever?

I am really impressed (and taken) with many of the iPhone shot (and processed) pics I've come across on Flickr. Almost makes me want to run out an get an iPhone. Which would mean I'd have to run out and then get these, too.

As to this photo, specifically, aside from being lovely, it makes me want to give Chioggia another chance the next time I'm in Venice. I've only been to Chioggia once, and, unfortunately, had a run-in with some neo-Nazi types (the swastika tattoos, combined with the shaved heads and mean glares gave their politics away, methinks).

What a lovely Paris portrait. Everyone should get to Paris at some point in their lives and have one taken. And ideally, with La Tour Eiffel featured somewhere in the frame.

Too bad the U.S. State Department's recent travel alert for Europe will likely deter a number of Yanks from venturing across the pond for photo opps like this one. The question is, how significant a number of travelers are we talking about? And this despite the fact that the alert "is not a travel warning, which would advise Americans from traveling to Europe."

Didn't George Bush say that terrorists wouldn't change our way of life? Or something to that effect? Surely, that was the biggest lie of all. And for all the promise of change, nothing seems to have changed on this point under President Barack Obama, as this latest travel alert from the State Department has been issued on his watch, and not that of his wildly unpopular predecessor.

*Sigh*
