My trip this spring can't come soon enough. I can't wait to return to this old and familiar city, and discover something new. This corner, for example. I know exactly where it is and I know it well, but I've never noticed or photographed it from this particular angle. One of the reasons why I love surfing through other people's pictures; no matter how well you know a place, there's always another angle that you'd never considered to make you see a city anew!

And a question for the photographer - Yamil Salinas Martínez - if s/he is so inclined: Is there anything special about this moment, day, trip, or place beyond what you've shared on Flickr that you'd like to add or comment on here? Along with other vivaca visitors, I would love to know more!

Sounds like the culture of Campo de' Fiori and other hot spots of Roman nightlife is about to undergo a major party-pooping change. I was just reading in this morning's paper about how Rome's new right-wing mayor has put into law stricter rules around alcohol after certain hours. Party all night long? No more. At least not out in public, drink in hand, on the streets of Roma. Oh, and nice picture by the way! The graffiti and stickered-up do-not-enter sign, and the light from the oncoming scooter; love it. Gives me a good feel for this bit of a city that I've not yet had the pleasure of seeing in person.

This photo may have been taken "with a poor Lumix Camera", but it's rich with artistic genius! Wonderful image. I love the reflection in the water. Both the black gondolas bobbing on a blue sky and the jumble of ochre and mustard buildings in the background. I know exactly where this is in Venice; it's a much snapped spot. And I think this is a unique image of the popular place. Very nice.

A friend of mine is reading a copy of City of Falling Angels that I gave to her to enjoy before our trip to Venice this spring. For some reason on my last trip there in 2005 I didn't visit the newly reopened Fenice theater. After the fact I read City of Falling Angels and now armed with some history of the theater and its place in Venetian history and society, I greatly anticipate a visit and tour. What a gorgeous theater!

Aside from the architecture and the history, the thing I love most about Venice is its cats. My friends there tell me there aren't as many as there used to be, but there are still little lions roaming in all corners of the city. This one here cracks me up. LOL cats. Love 'em.

I can't think of a better way to describe this photo than, "it's so Venice." A city with a million faces, facades, and moods to match, it can be hard to tell the difference between the real Venice and the museum or movie version of the city's - true? - self. Or is there a difference at all? I think that photos like this go a long way to answering that - unanswerable? - question. I know what my answer is. What's yours?

This is the most magical hour in Venice, in my personal opinion; the early morning hours when the city is yours. As everyone else sleeps. As to this particular picture - simply stunning. I've only ever seen Venice in the fog once, and it was fleeting. I hope to have similar mornings in Venice this spring. At least one!

New year, new post. Took me long enough, right? Happy (much belated) New Year! I look forward to traveling with you virtually through a flurry of inspirational photos in 2009. Starting with this here beauty by Hugo Martinez. I happened upon this photographer's work when searching for Lensbaby inspiration, as I am the proud new parent of a brand-spanking new Lensbaby Composer. Combined with my new Nikon D90, I hope to capture some spectacular shots in Venice, Italy this spring. Can't wait. In the meantime, I look to you all for inspiration. As per usual. I think Hugo Martinez' work with the Lensbaby is fantastic and I must say I'll be beyond pleased if any of my images are as delightful as his dreamy portraits of Paris. Kudos Hugo. You rock!
