As always, I wish I could capture a place with style, charm, and (most importantly) a vague likeness with something other than a camera. I can't draw. I can't sketch (is sketching drawing?). And I sure as heck can't paint. But thank goodness there are folks out there who can. What a wonderful way to travel and remember the world. Watercolors like this are my favorite. So lovely.

Your comments on this image are welcome, and encouraged! And a question for the photographer - rufusdos - photo - if s/he is so inclined: Is there anything special about this moment, day, trip, or place beyond what you've shared on Flickr that you'd like to add or comment on here? Along with other vivaca visitors, I would love to know more!

  1. Hey, glad you like the sketch. This scene is right in the heart of the financial district of London on a summer Sunday - totally empty and quiet. London is so good in the summer. Get off the beaten tourist trail and it's also one of the best places to eat in the world and won't break the bank. Go to Shoreditch, Dalston, Stoke Newington, Brixton, Borough Market, Spitalfields Market. So much colour.

I've always maintained that anyone can draw well, and the equipment can be easily pocketed. I sat drawing the lines for this with a dipping pen and a bottle of sepia ink for about two hours and it didn't look like much. I then washed in the shadows with a brush and some of the ink diluted in the cap of a mineral water bottle, and suddenly it becomes soemthing much more impressive.

  2. What great tips for London. I always think to avoid anywhere in Europe over the summer months, but perhaps I'll go out on a limb and get to London one summer. Sounds like an excellent time to be there.

Ha. Anyone can draw, eh? And draw well, even? I don't think so, my friend. You're not familiar with just how poor my skills are! And it sounds like you've got two talents - the sketching and the life-breathing with a brush and paints. I assure you that I'm in possession of neither of these fine skills. Believe me. I've tried to draw, sketch, paint and it's a sad, sad situation. Which is why I stick with my camera and thank my lucky stars for programs like Lightroom and Photoshop (:
