New Orleans seems like one of those places that everyone should endeavor to get to, at least once. I've not been there yet but it is most definitely on the list. My father grew up in the Shreveport area of Louisiana, but I've never been. Being that he's a Black man who came up in the Jim Crow South, he has a lot of bad memories and doesn't wish to go back for a visit anytime soon. Or anytime, period. I can't blame him. Especially after witnessing events post Hurricane Katrina. At any rate, I still want to go one day and I will. And with details like this, I expect to be charmed. Isn't this fixture wonderful? It reminds me of the hand-shaped door knockers you see throughout Venice. Coupled with the dappled light here, the ambiance is invitingly warm and cozy. Definitely a city (and a bar) I'd like to see. Cheers to that.

And a question for the photographer - marriedwithdinner - if she is so inclined: Is there anything special about this moment, day, trip, or place beyond what you've shared on Flickr that you'd like to add or comment on here? Along with other vivaca visitors, I would love to know more!

  1. hi Risamay! Thanks so much for featuring my photo.

Oh, gosh, there's so much to tell about New Orleans, and specifically about the Carousel Bar at the Hotel Monteleone, where I made that photo.

First of all, the is decorated like an old-time merry-go-round. And yes, the barstools do revolve around the bartenders! (More about the bar here: http://tinyurl.com/5z7vqf )

We were in New Orleans for the very first time, attending the Tales of the Cocktail conference. It was like the best wedding you've ever been to: All of our cocktail friends were there, a bunch of our Seattle friends, a lot of bloggers we know, basically every bartender we love from both of our hometowns, and any cocktail celebrity you can name. And inevitably, everyone would end up at the Carousel at some point in the evening. After dinner, people would stop in to see where everyone was going next. It was magical.

Oh and the weirdest thing? One of my Flickr friends shot a photo of a near-identical carousel the very same night... thousands of miles away. See here:

  2. What a cool trip! I can't get over the near identical photo your friend shot, at essentially the exact same time. What does that mean? Other than that the two of your are somehow cosmically connected and clearly meant to be friends, of course.
